Our History

Community Board of Middle Georgia began its work in 1966 under the direction of the Department of Public Health. Originally known as the Community Mental Health Center of Middle Georgia, our organization served citizens across nine counties in need of psychiatric aftercare services.

In July 1966, Dr. Louis Jacobs, a psychiatrist from Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia, was the first to deliver mental health services to individuals at the Laurens County Health Department. By 1976, we served approximately 1,100 clients, 500 in aftercare services and 600 in therapy.

Still known as a community mental health center, we became a community service board in 1994, by legislative action, and our name changed to Community Service Board of Middle Georgia. By that time, we were serving Georgians across ten counties.

In 2017, we acquired the Ogeechee Behavioral Health Services territory, increasing our service area to 16 counties throughout Central Georgia.

In September 2022, Community Service Board of Middle Georgia was awarded a CCBHC Planning, Development, and Implementation grant from SAMHSA, moving us toward a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC). This enables expanded access to behavioral healthcare while helping develop integrated healthcare practices and treatment for our communities.

Since our start in 1966, we have taken direction from the State of Georgia regarding service provision. Contracting with the Department of Public Health, then the Department of Human Resources, and currently the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, our agency has continued to grow, providing behavioral healthcare and IDD services across our region.

Today, Community Service Board of Middle Georgia provides care to nearly 6,000 adults and more than 3,400 children, youth, and young adults. Our forward-thinking team and board members remain committed to enhancing and expanding service provision and care as we continue to seek growth opportunities that further improve the range and quality of services offered.
