CSBMG’s Impact on Youth Mental Health: Addressing Challenges, Building Resilience
Written by: Erica Stokes
In response to the escalating mental health challenges faced by youth in middle Georgia, the Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG) is leveraging innovative approaches like Sources of Strength and Youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid to foster resilience, enhance support systems, and fill critical gaps in care.
Background and Context
Mental health challenges among youth in CSBMG’s catchment area are alarmingly prevalent. Each year, CSBMG serves approximately 3,000 youth and young adults dealing with mental health conditions, substance abuse, or developmental disabilities including autism. Weekly, the organization encounters 15–18 youth in crisis which often extends beyond schools to touch families, courts, law enforcement, and child services agencies.
Youth challenges are no longer confined to specific trends but instead span a wide array of issues, reflecting the complex social and psychological landscape that today’s students must navigate. Addressing mental health in schools is vital because students burdened with mental illness often struggle to meet academic and social demands.
Current Resources and Gaps
CSBMG offers an array of services for children and adolescents, including partnerships with private providers. However, the demand for services continues to outpace the supply. This growing gap underscores the need for increased resources and community collaboration to effectively reach and support struggling youth.
Sources of Strength and Mental Health First Aid
CSBMG incorporates Sources of Strength and Youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid into its programs and offers them as interventions and preventive measures in schools. These initiatives are utilized not only within CSBMG programs but also during school rallies and assemblies as requested by educators and community partners.
Sources of Strength
This evidence-based program emphasizes building protective factors through peer-led initiatives. It seeks to:
- Strengthen students’ social networks
- Empower youth to connect with trusted adults
- Reduce the stigma surrounding mental health discussions
Youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid
This training equips educators, parents, and students with the tools to recognize mental health challenges and respond appropriately. Its primary goals include:
- Increase awareness of mental health issues
- Enhance early intervention strategies
- Provide resources to connect youth with appropriate care
Additional Efforts
Beyond these training programs, CSBMG implements Apex School-Based Services, a Mental Health Resiliency Clubhouse, and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). These initiatives foster a supportive environment where students can thrive academically and emotionally.
Looking Ahead
The CSBMG team is committed to expanding programs to meet the growing demand for youth mental health services. Collaboration with schools, families, and community partners remains a cornerstone of our strategy to create a more resilient and well-supported generation.
By addressing the urgent need for mental health support within schools and beyond, CSBMG continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and adolescents in middle Georgia.
