Sharing Your Story Can Save a Life: Mental Health Lessons from Gary Gulman

Comedian Gary Gulman is known for his honesty and wit, but his openness about mental health may be his most powerful message yet. In recognition of Men’s Health Month, Gulman shared his journey through a two-and-a-half-year depression, offering practical insights that resonate far beyond the stage.

One reflection stands out: “When I was 20, a man casually mentioned that he took antidepressants… I WAS STUNNED. I was on Prozac and intensely guarded that secret, but that man’s honesty made me feel better, less alone” (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention [AFSP], 2025). That moment of casual honesty had a lasting impact—reminding us all that vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a bridge to connection.

At CSBMG, we believe in the power of real stories. When individuals share their mental health journeys, they not only help themselves but also give others permission to seek help, speak out, and heal. This June, let’s challenge the stigma and create a culture where talking about mental health is just as normal as talking about physical health.
