Understanding the Difference: Counseling, Therapy, and Telehealth

Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG)

In today’s digital world, individuals seeking mental health support may encounter a wide range of terms such as online counseling, online therapy, and telehealth therapy. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they do carry distinct meanings that can shape a person’s care journey. Understanding these differences is an important first step in choosing the right type of service for your mental health needs.

When exploring treatment options, it is common to come across terms that appear very similar, are sometimes used interchangeably yet differ in clinical meaning. According to Novak (n.d.), counseling and therapy both involve professional support, but they are not necessarily synonymous. Counseling typically refers to short-term support focused on specific issues, while therapy often involves more in-depth work on patterns of thinking, emotional functioning, or long-standing mental health conditions. Telehealth therapy, by contrast, extends these services into the virtual space, using secure technology platforms to provide access regardless of location.

For many, the need to seek professional support arises during times of distress, such as when experiencing anxiety, depression, or uncertainty about life’s challenges. Navigating unfamiliar terms can feel overwhelming. Yet, knowing the distinctions between services allows individuals to make informed choices about the care that best suits their situation. In particular, online or telehealth therapy may serve as a valuable option for those who are new to therapy or unsure where to start, especially during times when in-person care may be limited or less accessible.

Ultimately, whether through counseling, therapy, or telehealth, what matters most is taking the courageous step of reaching out for help. CSBMG is committed to ensuring that individuals across our 16-county service area have access to the resources and professional support they need to thrive.
