Wednesday Wellness

It may still be pretty warm, but can you feel the beginnings of fall in the air?   Maybe a little bit of cool air in the mornings, the shadows becoming longer and the days are getting shorter.   I know that many of us look forward to this time of year (I am definitely one who is coming into my favorite season) – and yes, we know there are those who prefer the hot weather of summer….

To prepare our health for this season here are a few tips to get a little boost!

  1. Be sure you have had or arrange for your preventive care checkups.
  2. Make lifestyle changes that you may have put off during the hot summer months.  Get outside and walk or do yard work, enjoy the fresh fall harvests and enjoy nature.   These changes can improve your overall health and reduce the risk of developing chronic health conditions.
  3. Autumn’s fruits and vegetables are not only fresher and tastier, they are also more nutrient-dense than out of season produce.  Apples, pears, pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens are abundant and healthy.
  4. With the change in the length of sunlight we receive daily, you may begin to feel tired earlier in the evenings.  Be sure to get enough sleep by being consistent with the time you go to bed and the time you wake up.   Aim for 7-8 hours per night.
  5. Shorter days and cooler temperatures can sometimes lead to feelings of sadness because we are not able to be outdoors as much so be sure to take care of your mental health.   Finding ways to relieve stress such as meditation, gardening, journaling and yoga are just a few good ideas.
  6. Focus on social wellness by staying connected to your community of loved ones.   Reach out to friends and family members, join a social or hobby group, volunteer and make time for social activities that you enjoy.
