Before the Plan Begins: Building the Conditions for Better Care
A promising idea can begin with a simple question: What would make care easier to access for the people we serve? Turning that idea into a dependable service takes more than a plan. It also takes a team that is ready to carry it out.
Leadership writer Steven McKee (2026) describes three parts of readiness: attitude, skillset, and capacity. Appetite means people understand the purpose of a change and want to help shape it. Skillset means they have the knowledge and support the work requires. Capacity means they have enough time and focus to follow through. A project rarely becomes strong unless these elements are built and barriers removed before a good strategy itself can work in the hands of daily care (CSBMG, 2026).
The briefing describes Julie Frazier’s three-part organization serving people with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities. After hearing from families about barriers to appointments such as limited clinic availability, in-home long distances and transportation concerns, the concept for care was born. In taking on such a big idea, staff and team partnerships, funding, and support can all be needed in order for that service (CSBMG, 2026). The same can still be developed when the building was purchased.
For organizations like Community Service Board of Middle Georgia, the readiness framework offers useful questions before any new initiative begins:
– Have the people doing the work helped shape the plan?
– What training or partnership will they need?
– Do they have the time and resources to deliver the service well?
These questions help leaders to match the people carrying services and the staff who support them. When teams know, prepare, and make room for the work, they are better positioned to turn promising ideas into consistent, person-centered care.
