Healthy Boundaries: A Foundation for Lasting Recovery

Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG)

Healthy boundaries are essential to emotional well-being, personal growth, and sustained recovery. Although boundaries are sometimes misunderstood as a way of distancing ourselves from others, their purpose is to establish healthier relationships while protecting individual needs and values.

For individuals navigating substance use recovery, establishing boundaries may involve recognizing unhealthy relationship patterns, limiting exposure to environments associated with substance use, or communicating personal expectations without guilt. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA, n.d.) emphasizes the importance of developing supportive relationships and establishing social environments that encourage recovery.

Healthy boundaries also promote self-respect, accountability, and emotional stability. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2023), recovery involves developing healthy relationships, strengthening personal wellness, and establishing supportive social networks.

At the Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG), recovery is recognized as an ongoing journey that requires healthy coping strategies, meaningful connections, and supportive environments.

Healthy boundaries are not about shutting people out. They are about creating the space necessary for healing, growth, and lasting recovery.
