Monday Motivation

I was listening to a podcast this morning on my way to work with Mel Robbins – author of “Let Them”.   If you haven’t read the book – I recommend!

She was a guest on this podcast and the discussion began with the fact that we spend up to 70% of our mental energy on things that are outside of our control.  It impacts our relationships, stress levels and our health.

Why do we do this?  One reason is social media.  Regardless of what we have or what we can do, we see what others have and what they are doing, and it may give us stress because we think we should do the same.   Why?  Is it fear of missing out, fear that someone else has more than we do, fear that someone else might do something better than we do?   What others do is out of our control, but it causes us issues.

I won’t give the entire story away, but she goes into detail about one of the stories in her book about two ladies who live in the same neighborhood and one who owns a business and has been doing it for 10+ years and has certifications and the other who just decided to do the same type of work with no credentials.   Everyone was raving over the lady’s work who had just decided to jump in, and it upset the person who had been doing this for years.   When she stopped to think about it though, she realized that she had not updated her website in years and did not post any of her work on social media so no one really knew what she was doing.   This was within her control to work harder on her own business but what she was focusing on was the fact that she seemed to feel this other person was an imposter which was out of her control…..

Focus on YOU and what you can do about your life and the situation that you may feel need work.   If we focus on what we can control, we can make a difference.
