Building Health Equity From the Ground Up

Social determinants of health (SDOH)—such as transportation, food access, and housing—play a critical role in shaping overall health outcomes. Yet, less than one-third of emergency departments in the U.S. screen for even one SDOH factor (Oss, 2025). At the Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG), we recognize that addressing these social needs is essential to improving behavioral health outcomes across our region.
We draw inspiration from other models that redefine rural health care by investing in infrastructure and community engagement. Efforts to rebuild access to food, health services, and safe public spaces in underserved areas demonstrate that when organizations plant deep roots, the whole community can grow.
At CSBMG, we are applying similar strategies by working with local partners to improve access to care, reduce disparities, and address root causes of crisis. True equity begins with listening—and committing for the long haul.
