Listening First: The Key to Community-Centered Care

When it comes to delivering effective care in rural areas, one lesson stands out: “Trust cannot be retrofitted—it must be built through sustained, intentional engagement” (Oss, 2025). That’s exactly what United Providers of Health proved in Bethel, North Carolina, and it’s a principle we follow at the Community Service Board of Middle Georgia.

UPOH’s leadership team—comprised of individuals who reflect the communities they serve—prioritized listening. Their approach was simple yet powerful: ask residents what they need, and then work alongside them to make it happen. From food security to digital access, UPOH’s investments were shaped by community input, not assumptions.

At CSBMG, we are committed to continuing this model of authentic, community-based care. By listening first and acting with intention, we can address health disparities and build systems that are rooted in the real lives of those we serve.
