Erica Stokes| July 23, 2024
We are thrilled to announce that the Georgia Agricultural Wellness Alliance (GAWA) has become a collaborative partner of the Loving Our Community Coalition (LOCC).
What is GAWA?
The Georgia Agricultural Wellness Alliance is a newly formed coalition composed of farmers, nonprofits, colleges and universities, health organizations, state agencies, agricultural commissions/associations, and agribusinesses. These entities work together to align efforts aimed at improving the well-being of farmers and farming communities in Georgia. GAWA is powered by the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center at Mercer University School of Medicine.
Consider Joining the Georgia Agricultural Wellness Alliance
GAWA is dedicated to addressing farm health, safety, and well-being in Georgia. The Alliance was established to combat the mental health challenges faced by farm families and communities. Whether you are a farmer, a farm family member, a care provider, an agency representative, an agribusiness professional, a faith leader, an educator, an official, or a community member wishing to support our farm families and rural communities, we encourage you to join GAWA.

GAWA and LOCC: A Promising Partnership
The partnership between GAWA and LOCC marks a significant step forward in supporting the agricultural community in our area. Recently, Lisa and I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. John McElveen, Director of Georgia Agricultural Wellness Alliance. During our meeting, Dr. McElveen shared valuable insights into the mental health challenges faced by farmers and their families. He emphasized the importance of community support and collaborative efforts in addressing these issues.
Dr. McElveen’s presentation to the July 15th Swainsboro Behavioral Health and Community Collaborative and the LOCC for Laurens, Johnson, and Emanuel County Collaborative highlighted the specific needs and challenges in Tift and Emanuel Counties. He discussed how GAWA aims to provide targeted support and resources to these areas, focusing on improving mental health outcomes and overall well-being for farm families. His comments underscored the critical role that local communities and organizations play in this initiative.
The Path Ahead
As we embark on this partnership, we look forward to working closely with GAWA to enhance the support and resources available to our agricultural communities. By joining forces, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of farmers and their families, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.
We invite all members of our community to get involved and support this vital initiative. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier future for our farm families and rural communities.
