Recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day: A Call to Action
By: Erica Stokes
On August 31st, we observe International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness of overdose and reducing the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths. It is a day to remember those who have died from overdose and to acknowledge the grief of the families and friends left behind. At the Community Service Board of Middle Georgia (CSBMG), we are committed to addressing this critical issue through education, prevention, and support.
In Central Georgia, the introduction of the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Line has been a significant step forward in providing immediate assistance to those in crisis. Since its implementation, the 9-8-8 line has received thousands of calls, demonstrating the pressing need for accessible mental health and crisis intervention services. This service plays a crucial role in our community, offering support to individuals struggling with substance use disorders and helping to prevent overdoses (Community Service Board of Middle Georgia, 2024). Additionally, the Georgia Amnesty Law provides legal protection for individuals who seek medical help during an overdose, emphasizing the importance of immediate intervention in saving lives.
At CSBMG, our initiatives, such as the Rise Up program and the distribution of Narcan kits and fentanyl test strips, are part of our comprehensive strategy to combat overdose. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to respond to overdoses, we aim to save lives and promote healthier lifestyles. This International Overdose Awareness Day, we stand with the global community in honoring those lost to overdose and reaffirm our commitment to providing the support and resources needed to prevent future tragedies.
