Wednesday Wellness

There has been a lot going on recently and stress levels have been a little high. A wonderful and natural way to relieve stress is available to you 24 hours a day – 7 days a week – your BREATH!. Breathwork is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, and you can use it anywhere and at any time.
Even if you have to hide in the restroom for a few minutes, you can use breathwork to slow down your sympathetic nervous system to get out of the fight or flight mode.
Find as quiet a space as you can and if you like, close your eyes. Relax your shoulders, your forehead and your jaws…….now take a DEEP breath in four a count of four – 1, 2, 3, 4 (breathe deeply into your belly), now hold this for a count of seven 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and then exhale all of the air for a count of eight 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Do this for a few rounds and hopefully you will feel a bit better.
We tend to shallow breathe into our chests, but deep breathing allows our heart rate to slow and our cortisol levels to come down. Cortisol is a hormone that helps our body to respond to stress and when we are in a state of chronic stress these increased levels can lead to other health problems.
This simple breathing technique can help us to regulate these levels but if you continue to experience chronic stress, be sure to seek assistance.
