The mental health needs of older adults are becoming an increasingly important area of focus in healthcare. According to a recent study, 11.5% of older adults in the U.S. experience a mental illness, and 8% struggle with substance use disorder (SUD) (Oss, 2024). While these numbers are lower than those found in younger populations, they still represent a significant portion of the elderly community, highlighting the importance of targeted interventions.

Older adults face a unique combination of mental health challenges, including depression and substance use disorder (SUD). Recent studies show that 11.8% of older adults experience symptoms of depression, and a concerning 0.3% of those aged 65 and older suffer from both depression and SUD (Oss, 2024).
